Hyenas are neither members of the cat nor dog family even though their characteristics are similar to cats and dogs. They have their own family called hyaenidae which is made up of four members - Striped hyenas, spotted hyenas, brown hyenas, and addrwof hyenas which is not wolf. In this species, males and females are similar in appearance and the male is slightly larger than the female. The head of the hyena is large and the muzzle is pointed. The front legs are longer and stronger than the hind legs and the hind legs are short and weak. The hind part of the back is narrow and descending, giving it the appearance of a hump. The body and legs have vertical black stripes. The stripes are more prominent in summer and fade in winter. It resembles the aardwolf in characteristics such as coloration, body stripes, and long body hair.
